Eleven-year-old Carolyn approached her wish making decision with the mindset of an experienced and concentrated researcher. After days of deliberation, she finally decided her wish was to travel to Hawaii. Carolyn, who has severe Crohn's disease, loves playing sports and swimming, so where else would she go other than Hawaii – a place where she can swim with dolphins, learn to surf in some of the clearest and brightest tropical waters and see some of the most amazing sights the world has to offer.
This past July, Carolyn, her parents, and her brother left their Pennsylvania home for a week-long excursion on the big island of Hawaii. After a long (but worth it) plane ride, Carolyn was more than thrilled to finally be in Hawaii and began checking off the activities on her wish list. Carolyn and her family were excited to explore Hawaii’s diverse landscapes, including some of the world’s most active volcanoes and most beautiful beaches. Carolyn’s favorite activity was learning a brand new sport: surfing. She and her family had so much fun spending time together as they surfed throughout the day. Carolyn also really enjoyed swimming with the dolphins. Not only did she have a private swimming lesson, but she was also able to spend some extra time with the dolphins due to the unexpected arrival of sea turtles into the dolphin tank. When Carolyn and her family were not out sightseeing around the island, they found some time to relax at the resort. They spent a few afternoons lounging around one of the three pools and later went out to play mini-golf or go kayaking in the serene surroundings of Hawaii. The family described their trip as “spectacular.”
The week went by fast, maybe too fast, but it is certainly a week that Carolyn and her family will keep in their memories for years to come. Every time Carolyn looks back upon her wish come true, it will surely help to replace any fears or misgivings with feelings of happiness and empowerment to continue to fight on and live her life as a normal kid.
