Anthony, 17, was inspired when he read about the majestic sights in Alaska’s Denali National Park, not knowing if he would ever get to go there. But then, Make-A-Wish® stepped in, sending this wish kid and his family on a carefree week enjoying the landscapes of the “last frontier” and forgetting about doctor appointments and hosptial stays.
“The trip was a once-in-a-lifetime trip that we probably never would have taken without Make-A-Wish,” said Anthony’s mom.
Anthony’s wish started with a plane ride over Denali to see some of the most amazing views from high in the sky. His stay in Fairbanks also included white water rafting.
Then it was off to the lodge at Denali National Park. Surrounded by the amazing Alaska Range of majestic mountains and glistening glaciers, Anthony and his family set out on a voyage in ice-cold waters to go fishing for arctic grayling and later met Jeff King and his sled dogs. While it was easy to forget about eating with all these fun activities planned for each day, Anthony found a restaurant called Take Fire that had the best gluten-free Belgium waffles he had ever tasted. The restaurant experience became even better when Anthony and his family got to meet the owner, who was also from Pennsylvania – they had a nice time reminiscing and chatting about home.
“Anthony was so excited about everything we did – in fact, he had a hard time picking his favorite activity because he loved everything,” his mom remarked.
This trip is not one that will soon be forgotten, as the bonds between Anthony and his family grew stronger than ever before. They shared laughter and smiles and made new memories that will help Anthony to forget about his medical condition, and instead continue to live life with a positive and cheerful outlook.
It provided all of us a break from the never-ending doctor appointments and gave us time for the four of us to be together in a beautiful and awe inspiring environment to enjoy nature and the kindess and compassion that were shown us by the people we met in Alaska and those who supported us through Make-A-Wish.
