Eighteen-year-old Katie has always had a keen eye for particulars. Diagnosed with Long Q-T syndrome, a rare heart condition, at age 10, she has been paying attention to subtle details related to her condition for all of her teenage years. When it came to her wish, she made a very specific request. She wanted to be in a parade at Walt Disney World® Resort.
Make-A-Wish® made Katie’s dream a reality. During Katie’s Florida wish experience she had the opportunity to be on a float at Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Park. She can remember wearing a special dress and having her hair done before riding in the parade where she waved at onlookers. Reminiscing about the impact of the wish, Katie said, “For me, my wish trip was not just another family vacation; it was a unique trip that allowed me to forget about being different or sick.”
Today, Katie is planning to attend Waynesburg University where she will put her attention to detail to work as she pursues a business degree in forensic accounting. In a scholarship application she expressed how much her wish experience has remained a part of her life, “My Make-A-Wish trip gives me something to look back on when I do not feel confident. To me, my wish meant hope.”
