Although Nicolas, 7, from Saltsburg, PA, is battling a life-threatening heart condition, he doesn't let it hold him back from enjoying the sports he loves most -- hockey, football, basketball and baseball. He especially loves to cheer for the Pittsburgh Steelers. So it was no surprise when this young sports enthusiast chose to meet his favorite football team for his wish.
On a warm summer morning, Nicolas and his family headed to the Steelers training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, where his wish would come true. Nicolas and his family were the only ones to watch the morning practice so it was a special treat for him. He was so excited to see the guys up close and personal. During practice, Nicolas' favorite player, Ben Roethlisberger, came over to talk to him. They sat on a cooler and talked about Nick's favorite sports, how far he can throw a football and their mutual love for Chuck E. Cheese. After practice wrapped up, some more of the players came over to meet Nicolas. Nick threw the ball between Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu and was lifted up by Casey Hampton for a group photo.
Nicolas' special wish wasn't over yet. It was time to head into the locker room to meet the rest of the players. One by one, Nicolas had his photo taken with the players and had his football autographed. When he met Mike Wallace, Mike and Nick joked around with one another about their similar hairstyles. Nick was also really excited to meet Heath Miller. Heath chatted with the family and even gave Nick his practice gloves as a keepsake. Once the meet and greet was wrapped up, the family was taken away by limo to enjoy lunch at Chuck E. Cheese. It was certainly a day Nicolas will never forget and one he can always look back on with a smile when times get tough.
