Ten-year-old Addy from Cranberry Township, PA, loves to let her imagination run wild, dreaming of exotic places like Hawaii and immersing herself in the pages of the Magic Treehouse books. Diagnosed with a brain tumor, Addy wished to have special adventures in her own backyard with her friends, just like the characters from her favorite books, to help her forget about the surgeries, chemotherapy and doctor visits she has endured over the past year. This is where Make-A-Wish® stepped in to make her wish a reality, bringing Hawaii to the backyard of this special little girl.
Addy could barely sleep the night before her volunteers arrived to help set up her new backyard oasis. Normally, Addy’s mom has to wake her daughter up, but the morning of her big wish day, Addy was up bright and early and bouncing around in the kitchen. Her eyes lit up as she watched her brand new trampoline, tire swing set and Hawaiian-themed patio set being placed in the center of her very own backyard.
To celebrate her wish coming true, a party was thrown in her honor, with kids from her neighborhood joining in on the fun. In addition to the trampoline, Addy’s new water balloon pressure pumper was a big hit! During the party, she made water balloons, which she dumped on the trampoline. She, her brothers, and all the neighborhood kids made up trampoline games, including one where they would bounce around with all the water balloons and tried not to let them burst.
Addy’s backyard makeover also includes a fire pit for roasting s’mores with her friends, Adirondack chairs, a hammock for relaxing and reading her Magic Treehouse books, and paper lanterns hanging from the trees to light up her new backyard. Addy even got walkie talkies so that she can call her mom whenever she wants snacks while enjoying her new outdoor oasis.
With her makeover complete, her backyard will now serve as a place she can go to whenever she wants to escape the worries and complications of her medical condition.
“It’s made a really rough year phenomenal,” said Addy’s mother, referring to her daughter’s wish, during a KDKA newscast.
Whenever Addy spends time in her wonderful backyard, she won’t have a care in the world and can focus on having fun as a kid. Addy and her family will continue to share many smiles, laughs, and memories in their new backyard paradise for years to come.
