A Look Back on Thomas' Wish

Wish Kid Thomas Header
At 15, the furthest thing from my mind was cancer in any form, let alone having cancer myself. When I started getting stabbing pains in my right knee, I assumed it was an injury or growing pains. For a time, doctors thought the same. But as time passed and the pain worsened, it became clear that something more than a simple injury was at hand. In March of 2007, after scans and x-rays, we discovered that there was a tumor the size of a fist growing on my knee.

Wish Wednesday: Bailey Reminisces about Dancing on Broadway

Dancing on the Broadway stage
At Make-A-Wish®, we love hearing from former wish kids who are eager to share the impact of their wish and what they are doing now. This week, we received an email from former Elk County wish kid Bailey. Her wish to explore New York City and dance on Broadway was granted in April 2002. Determined not to let her life-threatening skin disorder hold her back from accomplishing her dreams, today she is the reigning Pure American Pageant Ms. Pennsylvania and a dance teacher. Read on as she shares her story.

Wish Wednesday: Sierra Helping Other Wish Kids Feel Like Superstars

Sierra now works as a wish clerk in our Pittsburgh office
My relationship with Make-A-Wish® started long ago when I was just a small first-grader, and my school district raised money for this incredible foundation. While my biggest worry was learning how to ride a bike without training wheels, some wish kids were facing much larger personal and medical challenges. As the years went by, I began to understand the mission of Make-A-Wish and the impact that a wish can have on a child's life. But I never expected that I would be on the receiving end of a wish.

Did you hear? There was a worldwide celebration – a Celebration of Life. Millions of survivors united this past Sunday to show the world what life after cancer looks like.

Every first Sunday in June marks National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) – “a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families and an outreach to the community.” According to the NCSD Foundation, nearly 14 million people are living with a history of cancer, and some of those survivors include our resilient and courageous wish kids.
