'Make-A-Wish has revived my excitement to enter the workforce'

Marketing/Communications Intern Dana Fitzgerald
With my last semester of college at Point Park University quickly approaching, I decided to get a summer internship to prepare me for my career. Currently, I am the marketing and communications intern for Make-A-Wish® Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

I have always had an interest for non-profits, because I want to do meaningful work for a cause I care about. Last summer, I interned at a small non-profit, and I really enjoyed it. I figured I would stick with what I like. I have always known about Make-A-Wish, considering several wish kids lived in my town when I was younger, and I have been to several Make-A-Wish fundraisers. When I found out I got the internship, I couldn’t wait to start. It’s hard not to get excited about the Make-A-Wish mission.

Before starting at Make-A-Wish, I had been talking to friends who had recently graduated and were new to the workforce. Instead of getting me excited to graduate in December, they scared me. They all complained about long hours, miserable work environments and a lack of interest in their companies. Each of them gave me the typical ‘stay in college as long as you can’ speech. Suddenly, the “real world” seemed less desirable.

However, in just one month, Make-A-Wish has revived my excitement to enter the workforce. I am writing and distributing press releases, writing content for the website and assisting in outreach, all of which makes me feel like I am doing meaningful work. Not to mention, everyone at the office has welcomed me onto the team and treated me with respect. That is something that not every other internship offers.

My favorite day so far has been my trip to Children’s Hospital. I assisted my supervisor in outreach efforts by setting up an information table at the hospital. One little boy got very excited to see us and reached for a lollipop. When his mother informed us that he was a wish kid who had just returned from Walt Disney World®, he said, “I want to go back! Can I go back?” The way his eyes lit up made me proud to be a part of this organization. So far, my internship has assured me that I am in the right industry and has made the “real world” seem a little less scary!
