Celebrate National Culinary Arts Month with a Taste of Hope!

Josie and Daniel chose wishes that involved the culinary arts.
At some point or another, we have all found ourselves flipping through the television channels, coming across a cooking show and drooling over their culinary expertise. For most of us, a dinner-night-out is as far as we can get to this fine dine. But for a few wish kids, a chef-cooked meal was the real deal, and they were ready to stir up some excitement!

Three-year-old Josie, who is diagnosed with a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, knows exactly how to cook up some courage. Within her eastern-Pennsylvania home, she can often be seen reading her favorite cook books, watching the best culinary shows and accompanying her mother whip up something in the kitchen. On behalf of Make-A-Wish® Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia, Josie was granted her most craved for wish -- to meet and cook with Giada De Laurentiis, star chef of the Food Network show Everyday Italian. With all of the finest and fresh ingredients, Josie and Giada prepared a perfect pizza for the whole family. They all devoured the delicious meal while marveling over the delightful day spent in Giada’s kitchen.

At fifteen-years-old, Daniel endured a difficult battle while being diagnosed with a medulloblastoma. Between long rounds of chemotherapy, hospital stays and medical scans, Daniel was hungry for normality. Literally, he had an appetite for his passion -- food. Following his treatment, Daniel finally gained back his taste buds and ate to celebrate! On behalf of Make-A-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia, he was granted his wish to dine at the best restaurants in the big apple. He hopped from one hot spot to the next, including Gramercy Tavern, John's Pizzeria and Gotham Bar & Grill. To this day, Daniel, now 20, says the wish experience still has a profound impact on his life.

“This wish meant that even after all of the suffering I went through, there was still time to live, time to laugh, and time to eat."

Although these two cooking connoisseurs have completely different stories to serve, they have one special ingredient in common; they were both affected by the power of a wish. When Make-A-Wish was added to their recipe, it raised their spirits, sweetened their smiles, and filled their bellies with bliss. Their journeys teach us that there is always hope to be found in the places we meet, people we greet, and food we eat!
