Wish Wednesday: Summertime and the Livin's Easy

Abby on the beach
Time to bring out the beach towels and bathing suits – summer is finally here! And here at Make-A-Wish®, that means the height of wish travel season has begun. From beach vacations and swimming with dolphins to Orlando theme parks and Hawaii get-a-ways – our wish kids truly know how to dive into the summer sun as they forget about their illnesses and experience their most heartfelt wishes-come-true.

Carefree & Cancer-free

This past May, three-year-old Abby started her summer early as she and her family spent a week full of beach days and bliss on Captiva Island in Florida. While there, Abby forgot about the woes of her medical condition and instead celebrated life – carefree and, most importantly, cancer-free.

Family Time in the Aloha State

Last summer, wish kid Marissa was granted her wish to go to Hawaii with her family. While in Hawaii, Marissa not only had the chance to kick back and relax but she also let her adventurous spirit take the reins. Aside from all the activities available at her resort, Marissa swam with dolphins, went horseback riding, visited waterfalls and participated in a luau. Almost a year later and now in remission from leukemia, Marissa and her family still look back upon her wish experience with memories full of happiness and sun-kissed faces.

Even though Marissa’s wish is over, she has not cut her ties with Make-A-Wish. In an effort to pay it forward, Marissa has been organizing a car cruise event to benefit Make-A-Wish that will be taking place this coming Saturday, the 21st. Interested in attending her event? Fishing for a Wish

This third summer travel wish took place a few years ago, but it is not one to be forgotten. In July of 2010, wish kid Jonathon fulfilled his wish to go deep sea fishing in Nags Head, NC. Once they arrived to Nags Head, Jonathon and his family settled into their three-story beach cottage – their new home for the week with an unforgettable ocean view. However, Jonathon spent most of his time outside of the house as he explored the beaches of the Outer Banks, flew a plane (just for a few seconds!) over the island, and of course, went deep sea fishing. The minute Jonathan was out to sea, he caught fish after fish after fish – including amberjacks, sea trout, croakers, sea mullet, grey trout, speckled trout and stripers.

Throughout the summer, wish kids, just like Abby, Marissa and Jonathon, will be traveling all over to some bright and beautiful, fun and thrilling destinations as they are granted their wishes. Want to help these wish kids travel to their destinations? Donate your air miles today!
