Flashback Friday: Sports Wishes that Give Hope

Teddy, Coach Tomlin and Troy
After the great weather this past weekend and more in store, it may be safe to say that summer is finally here. With clear skies and a bright sun, children are more eager than ever to go outside and play.

Beginning June 1, Sports America Kids Month is celebrated to promote healthy thinking and physical fitness among children. Although sports seem to suggest the lessons of winning and losing to children, they provide much more than that. Sports offer physical fitness, mental fitness, sportsmanship, confidence and self-esteem.

Many of our wish kids have a true passion for sports, which is usually exhibited through their wish experiences. Their wishes can include meeting their favorite professional athlete or becoming part of the team. Nine-year-old Hope wanted to become a Notre Dame Cheerleader while ten-year-old Teddy wanted to meet Troy Polamalu from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Hope hoisted up during the Notre Dame pep rally paradeHope, who is diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, loves nothing more than cheering on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Her wish led her to Notre Dame, IN, where she was greeted by her future teammates. She was taught cheers and stunts along with receiving her own uniform and pompoms. All these tools were necessary as she participated in a pep rally. With all eyes on her, Hope discovered a new-found confidence while parading down Notre Dame Avenue.

As for Teddy, meeting Troy Polamalu would make everything else seem irrelevant, especially his heart condition. Teddy was blown away while attending a Steelers’ practice. He had his picture taken with the team and was presented a football autographed by each player. Teddy even stepped onto the field to practice with the Steelers. He described the day as “priceless.”

There are many wish kids, like Hope and Teddy, who have fulfilled their sports wishes and recognized their own determination and strength. To read about more wish kids who had life-changing sports experiences, click here.
