A Child's Best Friend

Alfonso and Jaden first meet
Helen Keller once said, "I would rather walk with a friend in the dark, than alone in the light.” A friend is just what our wish kids need -- someone to help them get through the tough times. When we ask our kids what their fondest wish would be, many answer a trip to Walt Disney World or a shopping spree to help get their minds off of their conditions. But others wish for a furry best friend. In honor of Love Your Pet day, here are the stories of a couple adorable wish kids who wanted a new puppy pal for their wish.

Alfonso Wishes for St. Bernard Jaden
Alfonso, who is living with a life-threatening heart condition, was nine-years-old when he first met Jaden, his big lovable St. Bernard. When his volunteers visited him, Alfonso said, “I’ve been wishing for him my whole life.” When Alfonso and his brother first spotted the pup at a breeder in Wheeling, WV, they ran off to meet him immediately. While Alfonso’s mom got all the feeding, house breaking, and grooming information from the breeder, the kids ran and played with the new puppy. It was love at first sight.

Today, Alfonso is 13 and Jaden is a HUGE friend that has become part of the family. Jaden is literally a “wish in motion.” Alfonso, Jaden and his family have attended many Make-A-Wish events, and Alfonso is even the honorary chairman of Make-A-Wish's participation in this year's Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community. Everywhere they go, Alfonso's family let people know how Jaden and Make-A-Wish came into their lives and changed it for the better.

"You have truly been a blessing to our family in so many ways," said Alfonso's mom. "In granting one wish for our son who they said wouldn't even live this long, Make-A-Wish actually did more than make his wish come true. You started a new outlook on life not for only him but our entire family. Alfonso has now started to make new friends and despite not being able to participate in sports, doesn't feel alone or left out. Thank you so much for continuing to be part of our lives!”

Sean's Guide Dog Max
Sean, too, wanted a best friend --a loveable service dog especially for him. He told Make-A-Wish, "I want a service dog so I’ll always have a best friend and he can alert my mom if something is wrong.”

Sean's wish day was celebrated with an ice cream party at a local park.  Sean's eyes lit up when he finally met Max, a rambunctious labrador retriever, for the first time. After eight months, Sean and Max are now best friends. Wherever Sean is, Max is right beside him. Sean is looking forward to many years with his new friend and guardian.
