History in the making: four-year-old wish kid Abby named Pittsburgh’s newest Macaroni penguin Cakey-Wakey at an event at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium on Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Cakey-Wakey is just the second to have hatched at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. Abby named the penguin Cakey-Wakey because she likes cake.
Along with her family, Abby will be fulfilling her most heartfelt wish to go to Walt Disney World® this coming fall. Abby, who is diagnosed with VATER syndrome, is receiving her wish on behalf of Make-A-Wish® Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
According to Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Public and Media Relations Manager Tracy Gray, Macaroni penguins are found in the Antarctic Peninsula on the Falkland and South Georgia Islands in the Southern Hemisphere. They live in large groups, or colonies, along the rocky shore. The next milestone for the Pittsburgh Zoo’s new Macaroni penguin is to learn how to swim.
