Most teenagers enjoy spending their free time at the mall, and if they are lucky, they will have enough money to buy a new shirt every so often. Thirteen-year-old Shannon was one of these teenagers. When Shannon, who has sickle cell anemia, found out she would be receiving a wish, she wanted to take her love of shopping to the next level. Shannon wished for a spree at the Lehigh Valley Mall.
Shannon’s day started with movie star treatment before she even left her neighborhood. Volunteer Christine Dunham recruited the help of ballerinas from The Dance Center in Shannon’s hometown to send Shannon off for her special day. Their “Arch of Flowers” and gift of a goody basket in the limo was the perfect way for Shannon to start her wish.
When Shannon arrived at Macy’s, she was greeted with a photo shoot and makeover. To make the experience extra special for Shannon, she was given a personal shopper. Later, GameStop kept the excitement going by welcoming her with snacks and lots of goodies.
The second half of Shannon’s day was equally as fun, with more snacks coming from Gertrude Hawk, where employees helped her dip her own strawberries. Later, Shannon continued to be treated like a star at the Guitar Center, where employees made sure Shannon felt like a rock star.
“The incredible generosity of this leg of the journey was awe-inspiring,” said the volunteers. “Manager Rob Bell, Zack, Michael and every single employee in the store swarmed around her beaming with smiles and offers of help and advice. By the time she left there with her new guitar, case, stand, strap, books, and electronic tuner, she had no trouble imagining herself on stage years from now. Words cannot begin to express the magic of what these fine people did for this wish child. Their huge discount was beyond what we expected.”
Although being a celebrity for a day seems exhausting, Shannon and her family re-fueled at Longhorn Steakhouse. They were given collector’s pins, a hat and stellar service. By the time Shannon hopped in her limo to go home, she couldn’t help but smile.
GameStop, Gertrude Hawk Chcocolates, The Guitar Center, Macy’s and Longhorn Steakhouse all provided discounts for this special day that Shannon will remember for years to come. Her shopping spree has given her a whole new attitude.
