Real Life Superheroes

Real life superheroes

Beetle Boy with Spiderman and the Green GoblinOnce upon a time, a little boy named Michael wished to be a superhero, much like his favorite comic book character, Spiderman. Make-A-Wish® made Michael’s wish come true. For one day, Michael was known as Beetle Boy, a brave little crimefighter armed with superpowers and courage. Beetle Boy chased down a notorious villain called The Green Goblin, thwarting the Goblin’s evil deeds along the way.

Make-A-Wish created a superhero for a day. However, this wish and the more than 17,000 other wishes our chapter has granted would not have been possible without the support of real-life superheroes—our volunteers. Make-A-Wish® Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia, a non-profit organization founded in 1983, grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

We serve families in 57 counties in western, central and northeastern Pennsylvania and in West Virginia. To reach as many children as possible, we established eight  offices. Our staff  in Pittsburgh, Erie, Pottsville, Punxsutawney, Scranton and York in Pennsylvania, and in Charleston and Morgantown, West Virginia, work together to fulfill hundreds of wishes each year for children like Michael who need a little bit of magic, surprises and happiness in their lives.

Why We Need Volunteers

Our volunteers are essential to our commitment to bring hope and magic into the lives of sick children. Throughout our territory, volunteers are the faces of Make-A-Wish® to children, families and donors.

What Our Volunteers Do for Us…

Beetle boy cartoonVolunteer projects at Make-A-Wish are varied and rewarding. Volunteers are matched with assignments tailored to their interests, special talents, skills and available hours.

Fulfilling wishes: Our volunteer “wish teams” work in teams of two or three to make the wish process as carefree and magical as possible for the family. Wish-granting volunteers meet with the family, determine the child’s wish and act as a liaison between the Make-A-Wish® staff and the wish family to make the wish come true.

Fund raising: Volunteers lend a hand at special events like golf tournaments, motorcycle runs and dances. They also work with the Make-A-Wish Development staff to help implement fund-raising programs at schools and workplaces.

Public speaking: The Speakers’ Bureau volunteers spread the word of our mission to groups, organizations and clubs.

Office support: Volunteers help with mailings, phone calls, filing and special projects in their local regional Make-A-Wish office.

How you can become a real-life superhero…

To help ensure the safety and security of our wish children and their families, we carefully screen all potential volunteers.  Applicants are invited to a one-on-one orientation followed by a mandatory training course. Prospective volunteers must also apply for and obtain a state criminal history background check and agree to abide by the policies and procedures of Make-A-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia and its national organization, Make-A-Wish® America.

Wish-granting volunteers must be 21 years of age or older and must agree to work as part of a two or three-person team. New wish volunteers work with an existing wish team as a trainee for up to three wishes.

Witness the magic of a wish firsthand. It’s easy to apply.

Catching the Green GoblinAt Make-A-Wish®, we ask children four simple questions:
  • If you could GO anywhere, where would you go?
  • If you could MEET anyone, who would you meet?
  • If you could HAVE anything, what would you choose?
  • If you could BE anything, what would you be?

You will witness firsthand how asking these questions alters the lives of sick children and their families forever…for the better. And we bet your life changes as well.
