In 1991, several mothers from the Pottsville area of Schuylkill County were watching their children play tee ball, sharing stories of their own experiences with a bat and glove, when the idea of playing a game of softball as a charity benefit began to form. A member of the group was actively involved as a local Make-A-Wish® volunteer and the connection was made: the first Moms for Make-A-Wish® Softball Tournament was held and raised $2,000. Twenty-five years later, a few of the original players and many new additional recruits continue the annual tradition of a week-long softball tournament to raise funds for Make-A-Wish. These dedicated women who form 17 teams conduct fundraising activities such as basket bingos, lottery calendar sales, donut sales, dine out events, poker runs, dinner and theme dances, and more as individual teams throughout the year, and have raised more than $600,000 collectively since the tournament’s inception. The 2016 event raised more than $100,000 alone.
