Wish Wednesday: Photos Worth a Thousand Words

Tyler get a lick from his new puppy, Bruce
Ever since Joseph Nicephore Niepce made the first photographic image with a camera obscura on a summer day in 1827, photos have been a way of capturing special moments in time -- moments to be cherished. They tell a story in a way that words never could -- capturing the emotion of a person during a milestone event or the beauty of a scene that the photographer doesn't want forgotten.

At Make-A-Wish, photos help tell our story. The story of kids and their families who have been through unimaginable challenges experiencing hope, strength and joy that once seemed out of reach. No matter how we can try to describe the impact of a wish, nothing expresses it better than a photo of a joyful kid with a smile that goes from ear to ear or a photo of a family enjoying each other's company and having a chance to forget about their worries for the first time in months or maybe even years.

In honor of National Photography Month, here are just some of our favorite photos that truly convey the impact of a wish.

The Power and Strength of a Wish from A Sibling's Perspective

Donna and Joe with Snow White
While wishes help the kids who receive them, they also have a profound impact on the wish kids' siblings and families. Wish siblings are often separated from their brothers or sisters while they are in the hospital and feel powerless as they watch them go through pain, treatments and doctor appointments. Make-A-Wish brings families back together again and helps replace fear and stress with optimism, hope and joy.

At Make-A-Wish Greater PA and WV, we have two wish siblings on staff who have witnessed the power of a wish. In honor of National Sibling Day, Wish Assistant Donna Heisler and Northern West Virginia Regional Manager Leandra Hickman reflect back on how Make-A-Wish positively impacted their siblings and families.

Wish Wednesday: Why Our Family Supports Make-A-Wish

Marilyn Noll - I'm an air miles donor
Our family knows through personal experience that one good way to give support to young people with life threatening illnesses is to support Make-A-Wish. We well understand that by donating travel miles to Make-A-Wish, we can enable these young people to experience an exciting and inspiring adventure of their own choice—and give hope and joy to them and their families.

Wish Wednesday: March is National Social Work Month

Peter Social Work Month
March is National Social Work Month and we’ve asked a couple of our social workers to share their experiences with Make-A-Wish for this week’s blog. Social workers play a vital role in the wish process by making referrals for kids that may qualify for Make-A-Wish. Without their referrals, wishes could never come true!

1,000 wishes. 1,000 memories. 1,000 amazing, brave children.

Bridget with family, friends, Kohl's and Make-A-Wish staff
We hit an amazing milestone in the Northern WV Regional Office last month. We granted our 1,000th wish to an inspiring girl from Clarksburg, WV. Wishes have been granted in the northern 32 counties of West Virginia since 1989 and on February 27, 2014, we hit that magic number – 1,000.

Wish Wednesday: Working for Make-A-Wish A "Rewarding Experience"

Lisa at work!
“There is no exercise better for strengthening the heart, than reaching down and lifting people up.” – John Holmes

That is just what our wish kids need—a positive chance to dream, that will lift their spirits and outshine draining medical treatments that are seemingly unfair for just a small child. Our wish kids deserve an opportunity to have a huge imagination and an enthusiastic dream. They deserve an extraordinary vision within reach. A vision that gives them the strength and hope that they can beat their illness. Some way. Somehow. That they can keep fighting and make it through such difficult times. That they can embrace the joy of just being a kid again.

Austin and Layla: Witnessing the Power of a Wish

Austin, his puppy Layla, his family and the Edinboro and Make-A-Wish crew
Austin, 16, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma about a year ago and has had a long, hard year of chemo treatments and the amputation of his foot due to complications from his illness. Near the end of his treatments, he realized what was missing…he needed a companion, someone to help him through his recovery. He needed a best friend. He needed a dog.

Wish Wednesday: National Tell a Fairytale Day

Aidan Becomes a Knight
Most of the fairytales we've all heard and know are found only in storybooks or the movies. However, in honor of National Tell a Fairytale Day, we have a few stories about some of our wish kids who have lived their own fairytales.

A Child's Best Friend

Alfonso and Jaden first meet
Helen Keller once said, "I would rather walk with a friend in the dark, than alone in the light.” A friend is just what our wish kids need -- someone to help them get through the tough times. When we ask our kids what their fondest wish would be, many answer a trip to Walt Disney World or a shopping spree to help get their minds off of their conditions. But others wish for a furry best friend. In honor of Love Your Pet day, here are the stories of a couple adorable wish kids who wanted a new puppy pal for their wish.
