One Year Since My Wish

Francesca walks the red carpet during LA Style Week
Today marks one year since Francesca became a Glamour Magazine fashion blogger for her wish. For Francesca, who is diagnosed with brain stem glioma, her wish gave her hope for a brighter future. Now an intern at our Pittsburgh office, Francesca is helping to share the Make-A-Wish mission with others. We're thrilled to have her as a member of our marketing/communications team.

Wish Wednesday: Fairytales of the Fall

Cameron as a member of the Notre Dame football team
The season of fall brings many new things; from changing leaves and crisp air, to pumpkin-picking and pig-skin tossing. And for some of our wish kids, it brings their own fun to get done.

Dancing on the Broadway stage
At Make-A-Wish®, we love hearing from former wish kids who are eager to share the impact of their wish and what they are doing now. This week, we received an email from former Elk County wish kid Bailey. Her wish to explore New York City and dance on Broadway was granted in April 2002. Determined not to let her life-threatening skin disorder hold her back from accomplishing her dreams, today she is the reigning Pure American Pageant Ms. Pennsylvania and a dance teacher. Kids Can Make a Difference

Development Coordinator Andrea Ballas accepts donation from Zack and his mom
Kids can make a difference – a phrase I first heard in elementary school, but, I admit, did not have much meaning for me. I always thought of it as something teachers told students so that they would help keep the playground clean after recess. This changed on August 1, 2013, when I started my first day of work at Make-A-Wish®. My new job entitled me to oversee our Kids for Wish Kids® fundraising program geared toward students under 18 years old. After 20 minutes of trying to organize my new desk, our staff was directed to assemble in the board room and greet a kid who is a celebrity in our office – Zachary Abel.

Wish Wednesday: Sierra Helping Other Wish Kids Feel Like Superstars

Sierra now works as a wish clerk in our Pittsburgh office
My relationship with Make-A-Wish® started long ago when I was just a small first-grader, and my school district raised money for this incredible foundation. While my biggest worry was learning how to ride a bike without training wheels, some wish kids were facing much larger personal and medical challenges. As the years went by, I began to understand the mission of Make-A-Wish and the impact that a wish can have on a child's life. But I never expected that I would be on the receiving end of a wish.

Wish Wednesday: Wishes that Won't Be Forgotten

Elizabeth enjoying a carefree day at the beach
There's pretty much a day for everything. If you look on "bizarre holiday" website calendars, you'll find Hug a Newsman day, Pig in a Blanket day, Clean your Refrigerator day, even a Wiggle Your Toes day (just to name a few). Today is "I Forgot" Day. While the intent of the "holiday" is to make up for all those forgotten birthdays and anniversaries, I couldn't help thinking of our wish families. They experience many days that they would rather forget. Make-A-Wish helps to replace these days of sickness, pain, doctor visits and hospital stays with unforgettable, joyful experiences. Wish kid Zack, who was granted his wish for a T-rex dinosaur in 2005 while battling cancer, now holds an annual event for Make-A-Wish and often thinks about his wish day.

"Make-A-Wish made a big difference in my recovery because it gave me a day of hope," said Zack. "It was a day I didn’t have to think about hospitals and being sick."

Many wish kids and families like Zack's have renewed hope after being granted a wish. So let's take a look at some wishes that kids and families tell us will stay with them forever.

Great Kindness in Small Package

Dana with Dominic and kids
As much as a written story tries to capture the joy of a wish-come-true, it just can’t compare to seeing a wish come true right before your very eyes. In my decade working at Make-A-Wish, I have had the privilege of witnessing many wishes come to life firsthand. But four-year-old Dominic’s wish will stay with me for a long time. You see, Dominic wished for a shopping spree but not entirely for himself.

The Impact of An Internship I Never Expected

Marketing/Communications Intern Aileen Ryan
I began my internship at Make-A-Wish® in the spring of my sophomore year, but I was no stranger to this amazing organization before that. During my freshman year at the University of Pittsburgh, I was eager to be a part of something bigger than myself so I joined the sorority Chi Omega. This decision ended up changing my life in more ways than one—ultimately leading me to my internship here.
