Wish Wednesday: Top 2013 Wish Moments

Looks of joy and surprise as Trevin's wish is revealed by Darth Vader and two Storm Troopers
When you look back at a year, you often think of special moments -- those short periods in time that made a difference and brought a smile to your face.

For our Make-A-Wish chapter, 2013 was a big year. So, before we get too far in to 2014, let's take a look back at the wishes and events in 2013 that stood out for our chapter.

April:  Trevin's Wish Reveal

As you watch the video of Trevin's reaction when Darth Vader and the Storm Troopers come to reveal  his wish to go to Star Wars weekend, you immediately get goosebumps.  The look on Trevin's face is something that words can't express.  You can hear Trevin say, "I've never been happy like this!"  Giving joy to kids like Trevin is what Make-A-Wish is all about.

Being a part of Trevin's wish reveal at the Erie Waffles and Wishes event, held in honor of the anniversary of the first wish, was a highlight of the year, and a career at Make-A-Wish, for Regional Senior Director  Jan Stork.  She said, "Witnessing Trevin's wish reveal is one of those moments that will remain with me forever... I can still see the look on Trevin's face when the Star Wars theme music started playing, and in walked Darth Vader with two Storm Troopers.  At that moment, Trevin's look was a combination of surprise and pure joy.  Every single person in that room could feel his excitement, and it was contagious. And at that moment I thought to myself, THIS is the power of a wish unfolding  right in front of us."

July: Zack's Make A Move for Make-A-Wish

In just his second year fundraising for Make-A-Wish, wish kid Zack did more than 'make a move."  He helped fulfill wishes for ten other wish kids!   Zack, who was granted his wish for a T-rex dinosaur back in 2005, amazes all who meet him, including our staff.  Zack, full of life and planning for the future, is truly a testament to the magic and power of a wish.

August: Noah's Cowboy Wish Cowboy Noah sports a big smile

Most six-year-olds would choose to go to Walt Disney World® or shop for new toys.  Not Noah.  This youngster loves everything about cowboys.  Ever since he saw Woody in Toy Story, he was hooked. Noah even watches Bonanza with his grandfather! So when he had the chance to be granted a wish, he wanted to have horseback riding lessons so he could be just like the cowboys he watches on TV and in the movies.   Local TV stations were there to witness this six-year-old's transformation into a true cowboy as he took his first riding lesson.

September: Our Chapter Grows

On September 1, our chapter added hundreds of wish families, volunteers and donors from Northern West Virginia to our Make-A-Wish family.  The former Northern West Virginia chapter merged with us  to become Make-A-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia.   We hope this change will allow us to better reach every eligible child for a wish.  In October, our new chapter was recognized by our national organization for outstanding fundraising performance, mission performance and chapter achievement.

We hope to grant 55 wishes in Fiscal Year 2014 in northern West Virginia. Chapter-wide, our goal is 762 wishes.

December:  Breanna's Wish Revealed at Macy's

Twelve-year-old Breanna started Friday, December 6, thinking that she would just be dropping off Santa letters at Macy's for the Believe campaign to benefit Make-A-Wish.  However, as soon as she walked outside at school, there was a limo waiting to whisk her away for her wish -- to shop for new bedroom accessories at Macy's.  At Macy’s Millcreek Mall, Breanna got to select bedding and accessories for her new room while her bedroom furniture was installed at home.   Breanna's wish was one of more than 50 that Macy's, one of our top donors, granted around the country on National Believe Day.

  • Trevin amazed that his wish is coming true

  • Zack, walkers and the Pittsburgh Pirates Mrs. T's perogies

  • Noah becomes a cowboy

  • Zack with the Make-A-Wish staff

  • Ride 'em, cowboy!

  • Breanna thanks Macy's for helping to make her wish come true
